Fish & Shellfish Allergy

Fish and shellfish can be a great source of protein in the diet, but the nutrients in fish can easily be made up for with a balanced diet which includes poultry, beef, pork, beans, nuts or seeds.

Fattier fish such as salmon do provide omega-3 fatty acids for brain and heart health.

Here are some ways to supplement these healthy fatty acids:

  • Ground Flax Seeds
  • Walnuts
  • Canola
  • Soybean
  • Flax Seed Oils

Reading Food Labels

Fish and shellfish both fall under the 2006 Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act and must be clearly stated on any packaged foods in the U.S. It will either be written in the ingredient list as “haddock” or “shellfish” for example. It may also be displayed under the ingredient list such as “contains fish”.
